Cold Plunge Before or After a Workout? What Real Logs and Research Show

4 min read · RealCase

Whether to cold plunge before or after a workout is one of the most-asked questions about ice baths, and the honest answer is that the evidence is thinner than the hype. Here's what one real 28-day log shows, what research has found, and what other tracked habits did for recovery.

A real 28-day cold plunge log

Ryan Ong took an ice bath every day from February 20 to March 19, 2023, lowering the water from about 16°C toward 9°C. His weekly cold time rose from 34.5 minutes in week one to 54 minutes in week four, and by day 28 he was staying in for 10 minutes.

Before or after?

Research reported by Newsweek found that cold plunges after exercise did little to speed muscle recovery in women compared with warm water or nothing at all. Many people therefore separate the two — plunging on rest days or several hours away from strength sessions — rather than jumping in straight after lifting.
